Brandon Phillips is a second baseman for the Cincinnati Reds. The Raleigh, North Carolina native was selected in the second round of the 1999 draft by the former Montreal Expos (currently the Washington Nationals) after signing a letter of intent to play both baseball and football at the University of Georgia. However, he instead signed with the Expos on June 21, 1999. From there, he was traded to the Cleveland Indians who later traded the All-Star to the Reds in 2006.
Phillips made a quick impact for the Reds leading the team in hits with 148 and multi-hit games (36) and led NL second basemen with 25 stolen bases. Phillips started the season out by being named NL Player of the Week the same month he was acquired by the Reds, hitting .452 (14–31) with 3 home runs and 17 runs batted in for the week of April 17–23. Phillips' 17 RBI were the most for an NL Player of the Week since Sammy Sosa had 19 RBI the week of August 4–10, 2002.
In 2007, Brandon Phillips was named The Reds MVP. At age 26 he had his first 30+ home run season, he also has 30+ steals making him the first 30-30 second baseman for the Reds. Phillips became just the third 30-30 Red, joining Eric Davis (37 HR, 50 SB in 1987) and Barry Larkin (33 HR, 36 SB in 1996). Phillips ended the 2007 season with 187 hits, 107 runs, 26 doubles, 6 triples, 30 home runs, 94 RBIs, 32 stolen bases, and a .288 batting average. He led the Reds in runs, hits, triples, and stolen bases.
In 2008, Phillips was the only NL second baseman with at least 20 Home Runs and 20 Steals. He also added his 1st Gold Glove Award for his outstanding fielding and leadership at second base. In addition, he was a Fielding Bible Award Winner. Phillips had another fine season in 2009.On the season the 28-year-old hit .276 with 30 doubles, 20 homers, 98 RBI, and 25 stolen bases last season while playing his typical stellar defense at second base.
In 2010, the Reds Second Baseman had his 1st All-Star Season. He hit .275 with 18 HR’s, 100 Runs scored and 59 RBIs. He also added his Second Gold Glove Award but more importantly played a huge role in leading the Cincinnati Reds to their first playoff appearance in 15 seasons.
