Devin McCourty was selected in the 1st Round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. McCourty attended Rutgers University beginning in 2005. After redshirting his first season, McCourty appeared in all 13 games as a freshman in 2006 and recored 38 tackles and two interceptions. In 2007, McCourty and his twin brother Jason McCourty started at cornerback, with Devin compiling 63 tackles, two interceptions, one forced fumble, and three blocked kicks on special teams. He was named an All-Big East Conference academic selection in his first two seasons. McCourty started 13 games at cornerback in his 2008 junior season, picking up 57 tackles, one interception, and a blocked punt. In his final season at Rutgers in 2009, McCourty started 13 games at cornerback, while still also working on special teams units. He had a career-high 80 tackles and was a headache for opposing offenses in both the secondary and the backfield, with 7.5 tackles for loss and 10 pass breakups.. He also averaged 25.4 yards on kickoff returns and had a 98-yard kickoff return, third-longest in Scarlet Knight’s history. Following the season, he was named to the All-Big East first team.
McCourty was part of five teams that played in bowl games during his career at Rutgers, including victories in the four bowls he appeared in. For his career, McCourty played in 52 games, including 39 consecutive starts to close out his career. He finished with 238 career tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. He totaled five inteceptions and broke up 27 passes, in addition to blocking seven kicks. (six punts, one field goal)
McCourty had a record-breaking night at the 2009 Rutgers Awards Banquet; becoming the first Scarlet Knight in history to earn the Homer Hazel Award (Team MVP) in addition to being named the team’s MVP on two units – defense and special teams. He was also the recipient of the Scholar-Athlete award. The Scholar-Athlete Award is presented "to the letter winner who has the highest academic average and has demonstrated outstanding football ability." McCourty was a semifinalist for the prestigious Draddy Trophy, regarded as the “Academic” Heisman. McCourty owned a 3.309 GPA in Sociology.
McCourty did awesome at the 2010 NFL Combine. His 40-yard dash time was clocked at 4.41 seconds while he did the 20-yard split in 2.65 seconds and shuttle in 4.07 seconds. His 40 was second among secondary players. His vertical jump was 36 inches and broad jump: 10-foot-6. His incredible Three-cone drill time of 6.70 only trailed Ole Miss’ Marshay Green. Most of these times ranked him near the top among all defensive backs.
