Description
Hank Greenberg was a legendary Major League Baseball Hall of Famer and one of the greatest sluggers to ever play the game. As the Detroit Tigers’ premier power hitter, he captured two World Series titles, two AL MVP awards, and hit a staggering 58 home runs in 1938—just two shy of the single-season record at the time. Beyond his incredible stats, Greenberg is remembered as a pioneering cultural figure who gracefully navigated antisemitism, famously sat out a crucial pennant race game on Yom Kippur, and proudly served 47 months in the U.S. military during WWII.
Despite losing nearly five prime seasons of his career to military service, Greenberg accumulated 331 career home runs and a blistering .313 lifetime batting average. He was a run-manufacturing machine, leading the American League in RBIs four times, including a massive 183 RBI season in 1937. In 1947, he became baseball’s first $100,000 player before retiring to serve as a successful team executive.
