Description
Henrik Lundqvist is a Swedish former professional ice hockey goaltender. He played his entire 15-season career with the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL). Before winning the Vezina Trophy in 2012, he was nominated in each of his first three seasons, and is the only goaltender in NHL history to record eleven 30-win seasons in his first twelve seasons. He holds the record for most wins by a European-born goaltender in the NHL. His dominating play during his rookie season resulted in the New York media and Rangers fans giving him the nickname “King Henrik”. During the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, he led the Swedish men’s team to their second Olympic gold medal.
Before joining the Rangers, Lundqvist played for Frölunda HC in Swedish Elitserien. During his years in Sweden, he developed into the league’s finest goaltender, winning the Honken Trophy in three consecutive seasons (2003, 2004, and 2005). In 2005, he also won two of the most prestigious awards in Swedish ice hockey, the Guldpucken (Golden Puck) and the Guldhjälmen (Golden Helmet).
Lundqvist was considered a butterfly style goaltender, though unorthodox because of the aggressive way he performed the butterfly. He was known for his strong positional play, both mental and physical toughness, and his upright torso stance. On August 20th, 2021, Lundqvist announced his retirement from professional ice hockey. That same day, the Rangers announced that they would retire number 30 in his honor during the 2021–22 season, which was retired on January 28th, 2022. Lundqvist was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2023.
As part of MSG (Madison Square Garden, NY) Network Series titled, “The Mask with Henrik Lundqvist,” the former world-famous goaltender for the New York Rangers featured some celebrity friends, who designed unique, one-of-a-kind helmets that Lundqvist wore during games throughout the 2015 season. Afterwards, the mask was donated to The Garden Of Dreams Foundation, a non-profit organization that works with The Madison Square Garden Company to positively impact the lives of children facing obstacles. Amongst those special guests were actor Michael J. Fox, chef Mario Batali, tennis legend John McEnroe, NASCAR’s Jeff Gordon, and superstar DJ/producer Tiesto.
John McEnroe is an American former professional tennis player. He was ranked as the world No. 1 in men’s singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for 170 weeks, and as world No. 1 in men’s doubles for 269 weeks (third-most of all time). He is one of two male players (alongside Stefan Edberg) to have held both No. 1 rankings, and the only one to hold both simultaneously. McEnroe was best known during his playing career for his shot-making and volleying skills, his rivalries with Björn Borg and Jimmy Connors, and his confrontational on-court behavior, which frequently landed him in trouble with umpires and tennis authorities.
McEnroe won an Open Era record 155 career titles: 77 in singles, 77 in doubles and 1 in mixed doubles. This includes seven singles majors (four at the US Open and three at Wimbledon), nine men’s doubles majors, and one mixed doubles major. McEnroe is the only male player to win more than 70 titles in both singles and doubles. His singles match record of 82–3 in 1984 remains the best single-season win rate of the Open Era. McEnroe also excelled at the year-end tournaments, winning eight singles and seven doubles titles, both of which are records. Three of his winning singles year-end championships were at the Masters Grand Prix (the ATP year-end event) and five were at the World Championship Tennis (WCT) Finals, an event that ended in 1989. He was named the ATP Player of the Year and the ITF World Champion three times each: in 1981, 1983 and 1984.
