Tom Seaver (1944–2020), nicknamed “Tom Terrific” and “The Franchise,” was an iconic MLB Hall of Fame pitcher. Across 20 seasons—primarily with the New York Mets—he won three Cy Young Awards, 311 games, and led the Mets to the 1969 World Series.
Born in Fresno, California, Seaver initially joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve before attending Fresno City College. He later transferred to the University of Southern California (USC), where his standout pitching caught the eye of MLB scouts.
The Mets and “The Franchise” Seaver was signed by the New York Mets in 1966 after a unique “hat lottery”. He immediately made his mark by winning the 1967 National League Rookie of the Year. By 1969, he captured his first Cy Young Award and led the “Miracle Mets” to a monumental World Series victory over the Baltimore Orioles. With a dominant, drop-and-drive delivery, he became the beloved bedrock of the franchise.
During his glittering career—which also included stints with the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago White Sox, and Boston Red Sox—Seaver amassed 3,640 strikeouts and a brilliant 2.86 ERA.
