$99.99

The featured 8 x 10 Photo captures Duke Snider and Don Newcombe celebrating in the locker room after the Brooklyn Dodgers seized their first championship in franchise history beating the New York Yankees in the 1955 World Series. Behind the sterling pitching of left-hander Johnny Podres, the Dodgers beat the Yankees 2-0 in the final and decisive game of the series at Yankees Stadium. It would be the only World Series the Dodgers won while based in Brooklyn, as the team relocated to Los Angeles after the 1957 season. This was the fifth time in nine years that the Yankees and the Dodgers met in the World Series, with the Yankees having won in 1947, 1949, 1952, and 1953; the Yankees would also win in the 1956 rematch.

In 1955, Newcombe went 20-5 with a 3.20 ERA and 17 Complete Games for the Dodgers. The “Duke of Flatbush” hit .309 with 42 HRs and 136 RBIs. The Photo has been signed in blue by Brooklyn Dodgers Legends Don Newcombe and Duke Snider. The Photo includes an official PSA/DNA hologram and matching COA for authenticity purposes.

Description

Edwin Donald “Duke” Snider nicknamed “the Silver Fox” and “the Duke of Flatbush”, was an American professional baseball player. Primarily a center fielder, he spent most of his Major League Baseball (MLB) career playing for the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers (1947–1962), later playing one season each for the New York Mets (1963) and San Francisco Giants (1964).

Snider was named to the National League (NL) All-Star roster eight times and was the NL Most Valuable Player (MVP) runner-up in 1955. In his 16 seasons with the Dodgers, he helped lead the team to six World Series, with victories in 1955 and 1959. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1980.

Don Newcombe, nicknamed “Newk”, was an American professional baseball pitcher who played ten non-consecutive seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB). He began his career in the Negro National League and ended it in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). Newcombe was the first pitcher to win the Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player, and Cy Young Awards during his career. This distinction would not be achieved again until 2011, when Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander, who was Rookie of the Year in 2006, won the Cy Young and MVP awards. In 1949, he became the first black pitcher to start a World Series game. In 1951, Newcombe was the first black pitcher to win 20 games in one season. In 1956, the inaugural year of the Cy Young Award, he became the first pitcher to win the National League MVP and the Cy Young in the same season. Newcombe was an excellent hitting pitcher who compiled a career batting average of .271 with 15 home runs and was used as a pinch hitter, a rarity for pitchers.
