Description

John Wetzel is an offensive tackle for the Atlanta Falcons. He was signed by the Oakland Raiders as an undrafted free agent in 2013. He played college football for Boston College. Wetzel has also been a member of the Indianapolis Colts, Arizona Cardinals and Dallas Cowboys.

The Pittsburgh native played behind Anthony Castonzo at BC, another tall tackle who started as a rookie for the Indianapolis Colts in 2011, in 14 games over his first two seasons. Wetzel stepped into the left tackle spot as a junior, however, starting all 12 games as the team struggled through a 4-8 season. As a senior, Wetzel moved over to the right tackle position. Wetzel appears to be the next in a long line of former Eagles including Marc Colombo, Gosder Cherilus and Jeremy Trueblood possessing the tall, strong build helping them all become starters at the next level.

In 2012, Wetzel started all 12 games at right tackle and played 886 snaps for the Eagles. He pass blocked for an offense that averaged 259.3 passing yards per game – the most since the 2007 team averaged 329.7 yards per game through the air. His stellar pass protection allowed quarterback Chase Rettig to throw for 300 or more yards in a game three times. Wetzel also paved the way for the Eagles to rack up 542 yards of total offense (441 passing, 101 rushing) with no sacks allowed against Miami (September 1st) and run blocked for Andre Williams’ 191-yard, two-touchdown rushing performance against Army (Oct. 6).

The featured Dallas Cowboys new era hat was worn by John Wetzel in Dallas Cowboys OTA’s (Organized Team Activities) in 2014. Wetzel has signed the hat in black. His #61 is also written in black below the bill.
