Willie Stargell (1940–2001) was a Hall of Fame slugger and beloved captain who spent his entire 21-year MLB career (1962–1982) with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Affectionately known as “Pops”, he anchored the “We Are Family” teams, leading the franchise to six division titles and two World Series championships (1971, 1979).

Stargell blasted 475 career home runs and hit the most home runs (296) of any player in the 1970s. In 1979, Stargell became the only player in MLB history to win the NL regular-season MVP, NLCS MVP, and World Series MVP in a single season. The talented slugger was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1988 in his first year of eligibility.

Beyond his booming “tape-measure” home runs and the stars he awarded teammates for outstanding play, Stargell’s legacy lives on in the community. The Pirates retired his number 8 in 1982 and erected a 12-foot bronze statue of him outside PNC Park. Today, his philanthropic work continues through the Willie Stargell Foundation for kidney disease research.
